How to Give Your Bedroom the Best Feng Shui Advantage

When it comes to Feng Shui, there are a lot of rules to follow and it can seem impossible to achieve if you don’t have the luxury of a large room to work with. But don’t give up. We’re going to make it simple with a few basic principles to follow which will help you achieve a bedroom with good Feng Shui, no matter what shape or size your bedroom is.

Firstly, what is Feng Shui and why it is important to incorporate it in our lives?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice which combines the philosophies of several branches of art and science, such as physics, astronomy and astrology, where the placement of objects within a space have an influence on the energy within that space, influencing the space positively or negatively. To have good Feng Shui is to have balance and harmony with the energies in any given space. The translation of the word Feng means wind and Shui means water. The combination of wind and water in Chinese culture is associated with good health. Achieving Feng Shui is achieving good health, or as it has come to mean, good fortune.

By incorporating Feng Shui in your home, you can create a positive environment which supports your personal energy. In Feng Shui, the bedroom is especially important as it is your sanctuary and the one place where you spend a lot of your time, in fact, a third of your life. Life’s hard enough so anything you can do to increase your good fortune is a good thing. By just following these five basic rules, you can create a bedroom with good Feng Shui.

1. Placement of your bed

Not all bedrooms will have the windows and the bedroom door in the perfect position for you to place your bed so I’m giving you three different layouts with the first being the best option if your room allows for it. If you have to follow one of the other two options, don’t worry. There are other things you can focus on in the bedroom to help achieve good Feng Shui.

Firstly, if possible, place your bed diagonally opposite, but facing the bedroom door. This is called the ‘’commanding position’’. The philosophy behind this position relates to our survival instinct. It keeps a safe distance from the door and in full view of it which gives you a feeling of security and a sense of relaxation, both conducive to a good night’s sleep.

The second best position for the bed would be with the door to the side but the bed still far from the door.

If your bedroom layout doesn’t allow for either of those two positions and you need to have the third option of your bed against the same wall as the door, make sure you leave as much space between the door and your bed and place a piece of furniture between the two.

2. Against a solid wall

Place your bed against a solid wall for the best Feng Shui. A solid wall helps you feel secure and creates strong, protective energy around your bed. If there is no option but to place the bed under a window, you can use a folding screen behind your bed to achieve the same effect.

3. Create balance

Creating balanced energy is important in Feng Shui. This can be achieved by making sure there is an equal amount of space on either side of the bed and also an even amount of furniture. That means having two bedside tables and each one having a lamp. The bedside tables do not need to be the same. Each side just needs to have one. That is also the case with the lamps.

Make sure that any other large piece of furniture, such as a chest of drawers is at the foot of the bed rather than on one side to maintain the balance of energy in the room.

4. Avoid sharp edges

There is a bad energy associated with Feng Shui called Sha Chi. It is an attacking energy which is thought to come from sharp corners on nearby furniture. If you can avoid it, make sure that you don’t have any square or hard angled bedside tables. Furniture with curved edges is thought to help positive energy flow seamlessly around your room and create a calm sanctuary.

5. Avoid under-bed storage

It is important in Feng Shui to allow energy to flow evenly around your bed. If you have items stored under your bed, the energy is obstructed and can not flow evenly. This can interfere with your sleeping pattern. It is also thought that some items cause more negative energy to flow from them so be careful what you do put under your bed! Shoes for example, are thought to symbolise people possibly taking advantage of you, so they are best stored in the cupboard. Likewise, if you are storing books under your bed, make sure they have positive titles and content. To be safe, keep that area totally clear.

If you follow as many of the above steps as your bedroom allows for, you will reap the benefits of sleeping in a bedroom with good Feng Shui. Play around, be creative and if you are unable to meet all the requirements, don’t fret. Even a little goes a long way in Feng Shui!
